UK Eurofighter Crews Go Green thanks to Weatherite Plant
Weatherite, the West Midlands based building services group, has supplied new comfort cooling and heating units for the UK’s first operational Eurofighter Typhoon squadron at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.The Eurofighter operational crew area is located in a 600 sq m single storey building which also houses offices, a workshop and various control rooms. These previously had 16 comfort cooling units using the HCFC refrigerant R22.
Aldridge-based Weatherite Building Services recovered and replaced these with a series of ceiling and wall-mounted units providing comfort heating and cooling but using the “greener” HFC refrigerants R410A & R407C.
“The installation is part of national policy to replace all existing ac units in government buildings with equipment using environmentally friendly refrigerants,” explains Weatherite sales director Mike Turton.
“Under the 1991 Montreal Protocol there will be a complete phasing out of R22 refrigerants by 2015.”
He said the Coningsby contract – worth over £100,000 – also involved the recovery and disposal of redundant R22 units in various office and workshop areas at the base.
In addition, other replacement units were installed at the satellite sites of Wainfleet and Donna Nook – both of which serve as control towers and observation posts for the RAF’s bombing ranges on the east coast.
