Weatherite Breathes Fresh Air into University Kitchen

Weatherite Building Services has installed a new kitchen ventilation system at Thames Valley University.

The eighth project Weatherite has carried out at the University, this installation was within the Universities well respected Hotel and Catering Faculty. The project involved fully converting an area into a fully equipped Food Excellence & Skills Training (FEAST) kitchen which will be used for various school meals training courses.

An ‘Inductovent’ canopy was chosen for the project because of its wide ranging benefits to the client. This includes its ‘energysaver’ system, which controls the level of ventilation needed into the kitchen, the systems low operating noise levels and the less frequent need to clean the grease filters and ductwork.

In addition, several canopies are controlled from one small touch-sensitive control panel and all canopies can be timed to switch off when the kitchen is closed.

For extra safety, the built-in temperature and optic sensors can detect smoke, automatically triggering the fan to speed up to 100% and providing people with early warning of possible fire conditions.

WEATHERITE BREATHES FRESH AIR INTO UNIVERSITY KITCHEN

Whilst carrying out the work, Weatherite engineers had to overcome a series of challenges, including a lack of space in the ceiling area, and the old floor-to-ceiling security shutter which obstructed the ductwork. This was overcome by their sister company Weatherite Shopfronts Ltd supplying a brand new shutter system.

In addition, as it was a five-storey building, engineers were unable to take extract ductwork to the top of the building and the existing duct riser was not adequate for the supply air volume required for a ground floor kitchen. Therefore, In order to reduce odours at ground level, the extracted air system incorporated a purification module.

Mike Turton, sales director, Weatherite Building Services, commented: “Our engineers worked hard to finish the project within four weeks, despite having to overcome a series of challenges.

“Thames Valley University has now benefitted from a wide range of services that Weatherite offers, including air conditioning, ventilation, electrical work, shutters, and ductwork cleaning and alterations. We look forward to working with them on many more projects in the future.”
